Inspired by the vibrant colors of the Hawaiian palate, I bought most of the material for this quilt on Oahu when we (Jim and I) visited there many years ago. Then the material sat unused on my shelf awaiting inspiration, which came when my work brought me to Haiti to build and support schools for several years after the 2010 earthquake. Despite the desperate conditions and enormous suffering, the Haitian women I met demonstrated transformative strength, spirit, and energy, seen in their work, clothes, art, and accomplishments. I worked on this quilt at home in Putney during the latter part of my work in Haiti.
